In Meadow Mari, the copula is optional with a predicative adjective in stative affirmative third person present tense sentences in indicative mood (2)–(3) (Kangasmaa-Minn 1998: 240). Everywhere else, that is, in non-third person, non-present, non-indicative and non-affirmative sentences, the copula is obligatory (1), (4) (Kangasmaa-Minn 1998: 240).
