In Meadow Mari, verbs have an affirmative and a negative inflectional paradigm in every tense and mood. The latter is formed using the negative verb. The inflected negative verb is followed by the bare verbal stem in the present and the first past tenses, and the uninflected past form in the second past (Bereczki 1990: 52).
