According to descriptive grammars, the basic word order of Meadow Mari is agent - patient - verb (SOV) (Riese et al. 2022, Kangasmaa-Minn 1998, Bereczki 1990, Pengitov et al. 1961). Though examples with an SVO order can also be found – presumably due to Russian influence –, the SOV order is still dominant in the neutral sentences of present-day Meadow Mari, as reported in Bradley et al.’s (2018) corpus-based study.
