In Meadow Mari, the most common way to express epistemic modality is by using different epistemic modifiers (5). Apart from this, future participle forms may have an epistemic interpretation in some cases (1). The Tatar adverb tiješ ’probably’, well-known in Eastern Mari dialects, can also be used in Mari, either in an adverbial function (4) or as a quasi-verb: in first and second person it forms a complex verb with the verb uleš ’be’, with uleš being optional in third person (2)─(3).
