In Meadow Mari the root is typically followed by the possessive suffix, which can be followed by the case suffix. This order, however, is not obligatory, with the PxCx order being more frequent in genitive and accusative case, and the CxPx ordering being more common in local case forms. In dative case and modal cases the frequency of the two orders is the same (Luutonen 1997: 34). In most dialects neither order counts as ungrammatical (Luutonen 1997: 127).
