OthTthThth: Each ordinal is derived, through the same pattern, from the root of its corresponding cardinal numeral. This is also known as the “oneth, twoth, threeth” type.
1 | ik(te) | 1st | ik-əmše |
---|---|---|---|
2 | kok(ət) | 2nd | kok-əmše |
3 | kum(ət) | 3rd | kum-šo |
4 | nəl(ət) | 4th | nəl-əmše |
5 | wič/wizət | 5th | wiz-əmše |
In Meadow Mari, ordinal numerals are formed by adding the derivational suffixes -mše, -mšo (or, in the case of stems ending in -m, the suffixes -še, -šo) to the short form of the cardinal numerals. The ordinal for ‘fifth’ is formed by taking the variant of the root containing the consonant -z as the basis.
