Most descriptive grammars of Mari (Bereczki (1990), (2002), Pengitov–Galkin (1961), Riese et al. (2022)) distinguish four pronominal cases (nominative, dative, accusative, and genitive). Alhoniemi (1985), quoting Uchayev (1982), also mentions comparative and comitative forms, emphasizing that they can only be found sporadically. Beke (1911) also includes an ablative form.
