In the system of Mari personal pronouns, third person singular and plural forms have been substituted by demonstratives. Traces of the original personal pronoun beginning with s- are discernible in the respective forms of the possessive paradigm, and, in a number of moods, verbal inflection, cf. Bereczki 2002: 70.
