In Udmurt there is no designated verbal inflectional paradigm that expresses solely the wishes or desires of the speaker. Though Bartens (2000: 219–223) identifies an optative construction that other sources (pl. Winkler 2001: 51, Tarakanov 2011: 168–169) usually categorize as imperative, according to our criteria it cannot be regarded as a distinct optative form as it can also express imperative mood. The construction in question is the analytic form made up of the combination of the particle med and an inflected future form of the main verb shown in (1)–(2) (it is used only in third person in literary Udmurt, but has a full paradigm in certain south-Udmurt dialects).
