(Udmurt)

NoSMark & Neutr

NoSMark: The function S is not explicitly marked, while P, A, or both are marked. S is therefore marked with a zero (∅) morpheme.

Neutr: Case alignment is neutral: the functions S, A, and P are not marked morphologically.

(1)polinaiź-e.
Polinasleep3SG
’Polina is sleeping.’ (Y. S.)

(2)polinaraisa-jezutća.
PolinaRaisaACClook_for.3SG
’Polina is looking for Raisa.’ (Y. S.)

(3)polinautća.
Polinaworklook_for.3SG
’Polina is looking for a job.’ (Y. S.)

In Udmurt, both the S (1), and the A (2)–(3) functions are morphologically unmarked. The P function is either morphologically marked with the accusative case suffix (2) or unmarked (3) depending on the specificity and definiteness of the object (Csúcs 1990: 34, Winkler 2001: 68, Csúcs 2003, É. Kiss–Tánczos 2018).
