Subordinate clauses of purpose contain special verb forms in Udmurt. If the subjects of the main clause and the embedded clause differ, the verb in the purpose clause has optative mood (1)–(2), using the terminology of Winkler (2011). (Whether these are really optative verb forms is subject to further research.) When the subjects of the clauses are the same, the verb in the purpose clause can be optative as previously defined (3), infinitival (4)–(5) or nominalized (6).
