Udmurt is traditionally considered a non-rigid SOV language (cf. Suihkonen 1990, Vilkuna 1998, Winkler 2001, 2011, Tánczos 2010, Timerkhanova 2011). Ponarjadov (2010), however, describes Udmurt as a mixed SOV–SVO type language, with a more dominant presence of the “SOV-component”. Research carried out by Asztalos et al. (2017) and Asztalos (2018) indicates that in present-day Udmurt the word order of an information structurally neutral sentence can be either SOV (1) or SVO (2), irrespective of the definiteness of S and O or other grammatical properties, and that present-day Udmurt is undergoing a change in its basic word order. However, the SOV order is more frequent in a neutral sentence than the SVO (Asztalos: 2018). For more information see the Dominant word order (S, V, O) parameter.
