In Udmurt, the following categories can be expressed by verbal inflection: tense, mood, polarity, the person and number of the subject, and (only in past tense) evidentiality and aspect. A maximally inflected verb form contains 6 categories: number and person of the subject, tense, polarity, evidentiality, and aspect (1). The evidential verb form in (1) is made up of the negative present tense indicative form of the lexical verb and the non-eyewitness past (evidential) form of the copula and – as opposed to the verb form in (2) – indicates a long-running past activity (event, etc) in continuous aspect (Tarakanov 2011: 187).
