In Udmurt, the following categories can be expressed by verbal inflection: tense (1), (3), mood (2), polarity (3), the number and person of the subject (1)–(5), (only in past tense) evidentiality (4) and aspect (5). The negative verb form consists of the inflected form of the negative verb and the connegative form of the lexical verb that is negated (3) (the negative verb and the connegative root are morphologically related). The marking of aspect using verbal inflection (in past tense forms) is likewise analytical (5).
